South Middle School
Wright Flight Program
Instructor: Mr. Dufraine
The South Middle School chapter of Wright Flight allows students the opportunity to take to the skies and pilot an aircraft by themselves. The program’s intent is to introduce students to the many facets of the aviation industry including operations, manufacturing, and ground support.
Wright Flight is open to any motivated South Middle School 7th or 8th grader. Students must set academic goals at the beginning of the program and meet these goals by flight day. Particular emphasis is placed on S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) courses. Participating students experience a variety of activities and lessons that reinforce the program’s objectives including field trips to the New England Air Museum and local aviation manufacturing facilities. Flight day takes place at Barnes Regional Airport in Westfield around the end of May or beginning of June. Students will complete a 30-minute flight at the controls of a general aviation aircraft. Wright Flight meets on Tuesday afternoons from 2:30 – 4:00 PM in Room 119 beginning in early January. There is a $190.00 fee required with the program application. Please see Mr. Dufraine for an application beginning in early December. A parents’ information discussion will be held in early December to answer additional questions about the program.
